In a technical environment, ESD can be very costly by harming devices or components. ESD may cause a catastrophic failure that appears immediately or a latent failure in which gradual degradation occurs during use, resulting in eventual failure. Before moving a computer, hard drive, or other component, discharge personal static build up by touching a grounded metal object, such as a plugged-in computer chassis.
Handle a hard disk drive as you would handle an egg. Handle failed hard disk drives with the same care as new drives.
Packing Instructions
Use the original shipping materials, if you still have them. If not, they are relatively easy to replicate.
Wrap media in an anti-static bag or similar material to prevent ESD. Use a box that is at least twice the size of the media so that the media can be suspended in the middle of the box. We recommend a minimum of two inches of insulation all around for a 2 lb drive. Pack securely with foam, bubble wrap, or newspaper so the media will not move from the middle of the box.
Avoid using packing peanuts as contents will settle to the bottom of the box.
If sending a computer, laptop, or notebook, use great care to ensure proper cushioning and protection. We recommend at least 6 inches of insulation. The heavier the unit, the more insulation is required.
Make sure the package is clearly labeled as FRAGILE and don’t forget to include the completed and signed evaluation request form.
Shipping Instructions
Please print out the label after you submit the case online and attach it to the box, or you can use any other courier to generate a label using the address you chose when submitting the case.
If you dont use our case generator label, please write the case number on the box.
The Time it takes to recover data
Time is money.
We understand that time can be very crucial for our clients, especially when its involved a business downtime.
Our company, within all its departments and service chain, from the shipping the receiving, to the lab and engineers, to customer service, all are aware of the importance of the time factor.
We designed a custom database to measure and monitor all the aspects and phases of time within our company and the recovery process.
When we quote a case, we estimate how long a recovery will take, our quote will not change if it takes longer (which rarely it is) – therefore its in our best interest to complete the recovery on time and/or exceed the client expectation to recover their data sooner than later.
In many mission time critical cases, clients choosing our 24/7 around the clock recovery, that service level will include a dedicated team working on the case around the clock.
In addition to our awareness and time monitoring tools, our R&D departments developed recovery tools with time aspect in mind. For example, we developed a remote recovery OS image, where the client can download and create a bootable USB drive, in many cases, the media doesn’t have to be brought or shipped in to us and the whole recovery can be done remotely. Our recovery tools are designed to focus on the client critical files, instead of wasting valuable time on recovering what the client does not need.
Time related FAQs:
How long will take to receive my data back?
Once the recovery is done, we can put all the data on a secure FTP site for immediate download. We can also prepare the data on a drive and ship it back to the client on regular ground service or overnight. We can focus on the client files priority and make those available first.
How long an evaluation take?
Generally 8-24 hours or a business day, and we can always expedite it with an additional cost.
How long is the recovery process takes?
These are our general service options:
In-lab standard recovery (Usually 3-5 business days
In-lab priority recovery (Usually 1-3 business days)
In-lab emergency recovery (24/7 around the clock recovery)
On-site recovery (On clients premises)
Remote (24/7/365 around the clock recovery)
As we our a client focused company, the time can change from one case to another based on the type of problem, media size and work involved. Please contact us and speak to an expert to discuss your specific case. We are standing by. 24/7.
The Cost of Data Recovery
The cost of recovery is based on several factors including:
Cause of the data loss and its effect on the media.
Severity of the data loss.
Amount of data or media size in some cases may affect the cost.
Amount of work necessary to retrieve the critical data.
Resources our company need to allocate for the specific case.
Expertise within our company who can perform the recovery.
The first step in the data recovery process is for our engineers to conduct a thorough diagnostic evaluation of your media and put together an accurate recovery plan specific to your case.
This comprehensive analysis gives our engineers insight into the underlying issues regarding your case and allows us to develop a custom recovery plan that provides the best chance of recovering your critical data.
There are many data recovery companies that are not reputable offering flat rate pricing or exact pricing over the phone prior to even seeing the media. This is designed to get your case in the door where the price can either change from that point or they can charge you for a recovery that may not even be successful or what you are looking to recover.
If you request an estimate or contact us directly, we will provide you with a range of pricing based on the details of your case, so you know upfront what to expect from us. This eliminates any surprises and provides utmost transparency which is what you would expect from a reputable professional data recovery company.
WeRecoverData.com offers both competitive pricing and industry leading data recovery times to help minimize the downtime you are experiencing with your data loss. Furthermore, we guarantee the success our data recoveries! If we cannot recover your critical files, there is no charge for the recovery fee!
Access is the action of obtaining data from or writing data into a data storage device.
ANSI
American National Standards Institute.
ATA
Advanced Technology Attachment. ATA was originally defined as a standard for embedded fixed disk storage on IBM AT compatible PCs and is now the dominant storage interface.
Bit
Bit is an abbreviation for binary digit. A bit can only contain the value 1 or 0. The bit is the basic data unit for digital computers.
Buffer
The buffer is the storage area used to temporarily store data so that a difference in data transfer rates and/or data processing rates between sender and receiver can be compensated.
Byte
A byte consists of eight bits.
Cache
Like the buffer, the cache is DRAM (dynamic random access memory) on the hard drive used to store temporary data that has recently been accessed or data waiting to be written to the disk.
Capacity
Capacity is the amount of data that can be stored in a given storage device, usually expressed in bytes.
Channel
A channel (referring to that on a data cable) is a collection of electronic circuits used for data writing and reading processes to and from magnetic media.
Data
Data is an ordered collection of information.
Gigabyte (GB)
A unit of storage. 1 GB can mean either 1,000,000,000 bytes using the decimal system or 1,073,741,824 bytes using the binary system. Most hard drive manufacturers define 1GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, while the operating system will treat 1GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes. This is why the operating system shows the hard drive’s capacity as different to the manufacturer’s claim.
Jumper
Jumpers are used to set a hard drive’s attributes, such as Master/Slave. A jumper is in essence a simple on/off switch and when placed over two pins it is the same as closing a circuit. The combination of one or several jumpers results in different settings.
Latency
Latency refers to the delay that occurs when requesting a specific response. Less latency is better.
Megabyte (MB)
A unit of storage. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes decimal or 1,048,576 bytes binary. Hard drive manufacturers usually apply the decimal system while the operation systems apply binary system of calculating storage capacity.
ATA is the acronym for Advanced Technology Attachment, and it has become an industry standard hard drive interface for 15 years. ATA uses a 16-bit parallel connection to make the link between storage devices and motherboards, and is also called PATA to distinguish it from the newer SATA standard. In additional, ATA is also known as IDE or EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics). Currently the two most popular standards for ATA hard drives are the ATA-6 (which is also known as Ultra ATA 100 or Ultra DMA 100) and ATA 133. The maximum bandwidth for the former is 100MB/s, and 133 MB/s for the latter.
SATA (Serial ATA)
SATA is an interface standard for connecting hard drives to computer systems, and is based on serial signaling technology. The advantages over PATA include longer, thinner cables for more efficient airflow within a computer chassis, fewer pin conductors for reduced electromagnetic interference, and lower signal voltage to minimize noise margin. The bandwidth of SATA is also far improved over today’s PATA – the SATA 1.0 can reach a maximum of 1.5Gb/s (150MB/s), while the latest SATA 2.5 standard can support up to 3Gb/s (300MB/s). As a result of so many advantages, the SATA interface is gradually replacing PATA as the mainstream hard drive interface in the personal storage market.
SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)
SCSI is a standard interface for transferring data between devices and computers. Thanks to its outstanding ability to compartmentalize diverse operation, SCSI is very suitable for multitasking operating environments. Also, SCSI enhances critical performance in situations where more than one device is connected. Before serial signaling technology was applied into the SCSI field, all SCSI interface standards used parallel technology to transfer data.
RAID (Redundant Array of Independent/Inexpensive Disks)
RAID is a method of using multiple hard drives together for data storage. A RAID system with multiple hard drives appears as a single drive to the operating system. Depending on the RAID level, the benefits provided by RAID is one or more of the following: better throughput, fault-tolerance or capacity (or something else) when compared to single hard drive.
RAID level 0 (or RAID 0) is known as striping, where data is striped across multiple hard drives. RAID 0 provides the most advanced throughput and capacity, but offers no fault-tolerance.
RAID level 1 (RAID 1) is known as mirroring, which stores the exact same data within at least two hard drives, this method shows excellent fault-tolerance and reliability, but delivers less capacity efficiency.
RAID level 0+1 and RAID 1+0 are both striping and mirroring, providing good fault-tolerance and throughput all at the same time.
There are other RAID levels available too, such as RAID level 5 and RAID level 6.
Read
Reading is the action of access a storage location and obtaining the stored data.
Write
Writing is the action of recording data on a storage device.
WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
1. Unplug all cables.
2. Remove the screws on the rear of the PC.
3. Slide both side panels off from the back of the PC.
4. On other cases, it may be necessary to remove the front of the PC so that you can remove the drive cage. If so, press in on the tabs that retain the front cover, and pull forward. Carefully detach any cables that may also be attached to the front cover.
Step 2: Disconnecting the cables
1. Locate the hard drive. The hard drive is usually under the CD and DVD drives and has a thin flat ribbon cable.
2. Disconnect the IDE or Serial ATA cable and the power cable from the back of the drive.
IDE Hard Drive
SATA Hard Drive
CAUTION: You need to unlatch the cables for Serial ATA drives. Press the latch and pull the cables. Failure to unlatch the connector may damage the hard drive.
Step 3: Removing the drive
If the drive is attached to the chassis or drive cage with screws, remove the screws and slide the drive out.
If the drive is retained by a plastic latching system, lift the latch to slide the drive out.

What are the fees to recover data?
Our data recovery fee depends on media type, amount of data and the physical condition of the media. If we cannot recover your data there will not be a recovery charge. We handle any type of complexity therefore our prices may significantly vary from case to case. Beware of companies that will get you in the door and charge you regardless of whether or not they can recover any data. We hear of many bad experiences from customers that used other companies on a daily basis. Please contact us to discuss the flexible payment options we offer.* In the event that a recovery has been previously attempted on your media, a fee for the diagnostic may be applicable. Please remember that the first chance at a recovery is your BEST chance at a recovery, so send your critical data to the professionals at WeRecoverData.com!
If my drive has been opened is there a diagnostic fee?
A diagnostic fee will be applicable to drives in which the seals have been broken or cracked.

Usually the evaluation is done within 8-24 hours and most of the recoveries are done within a day or two. We do offer an expedited and a 24/7 emergency evaluation and recovery options- please contact us regarding these options. See more here: Emergency Data Recovery Service
I’ve been told that my data cannot be recovered; do I still have a hope?
We`ve received cases from other companies who claim that the data is lost forever and we`ve recovered it. Our unique approach, expertise and technology allow us to recover cases with a better success rate than any other company. If there is a special need to develop the technology to recover the data, we have the ability to do so. If no one did it before, it doesn’t mean it cannot be done! See more here: Custom Data Recovery Solutions
My hard drive is making clicking noises, can the data still be recovered?
If the hard drive is making sounds it has never made before, stop your work immediately; keeping it on or force reading it may cause more damage. Call, bring it in or ship it to us. We can still help you recover the data.
Is it possible to recover data from a hard drive that was accidentally formatted?
Yes, definitely, we can recover data from a hard drive that was formatted, erased and even repartitioned!
Can you recover a file that was deleted accidentally?
In many cases we can. We would need to know one of the following: the type of file, the name of the file and when you accidentally deleted it.
My external hard drive is asking to be initialized or formatted. I need some of the files on it. Should I use some utility to try and fix this myself?
If the data is critical, we don’t suggest running any utilities on it. We’d rather have you bring the drive in for a professional data recovery engineer to examine it. Be aware – utilities are never guaranteed, and can often cause more harm than good.
My computer was in a fire, have I lost my data?
Not necessarily. We have recovered data from fire or flood damaged media in the past.
Our RAID failed, we re-striped/re-initialized the RAID array, formatted the array and copied data back to it. Is there a chance of recovering the data before the re-striping/re-initialization?
We can possibly recover the data in these cases. It will depend on the RAID controller’s functionality and how much data was copied to the array. We have done this before. See more: RAID Data Recovery
What is your success rate?
We recovered cases where many other including other “world leaders” data recovery providers failed to recover. We have a proof of that; we can email that to you, simply call us and request proof. We do not publish the success rate in order not mislead our customers due to false claims made by other small data recovery providers. We know that if its technically possible, we will recover it. If we cant recover it, no one can.

Data Recovery Case Studies
RAID Recovery – Vidipax
In the middle of changing an office domain, the main file server at Vidipax went down, evidently a physically damaged RAID. Workers at Vidipax then discovered that the tape backup had not been functioning properly; about 5 months of work was gone. One of the things the server drive array had contained was a huge database for their biggest client, the Coca-Cola Company, and it was almost time to deliver to them. If the data could not be recovered, Vidipax would almost certainly go out of business.
(The Coca-Cola Company) , and it was almost time to deliver it to them. If the data was lost, Vidipax would almost certainly go out of business.
Vidipax called us, we worked on it and recovered all the lost data.
” All our data is fully restored, and we’re back to normal. Thanks so much for saving our business!”
Simon Hinkler VidiPax NYC
RAID Recovery – TBRC
The project manager of TBRC brought us hard drives from a Dell server after a power outage.
A Linux operation system was originally installed on that server with an EXT2 file system on a RAID array.
Our engineers examined the array and determined that there was a physical corruption, most likely caused by the power outage.
After the customer approved the price quoted, we started the recovery and successfully recovered 100% of the RAID data.
For reference call us to get the contact information.
Snap Server – Adaptec
An Adaptec snap server being used as a NAS (Network Attached data Storage) unit for one ofForbes.com’s departments was sent to us after the one of the drives failed.
The server consisted of 4 drives of 250GB each. After getting notice that one of the drives failed Forbe’s IT department called Adaptec-Snap Server Tech Support for help. Adaptec said they would ship a replacement drive overnight. Forbe’s IT department received the replacement drive, and replaced it with the failed one; during the process of rebuilding the RAID 5. Unfortunately, a second hard drive failed.
Forbe’s IT department talked to Adaptec Tech Support but they couldn’t help them get the data back. Eventually they concluded that the data was lost. Forbes contacted us and we advised them to only bring the drives. As this was a high priority case, Forbes asked to have the recovery expedited.
After a quick evaluation that took about 2 hours, we determined that a recovery was possible. It was decided to move forward and complete the recovery.
After the completion of the recovery, Forbes received a file list of the recovered data. After receiving approval from Forbes that we had successfully recovered their critical data, we began the data prep process.
Forbes.com has since registered as a corporate partner of ours to get a better response in case of another future data loss situation.
